Annual Hackathon

On April 7th, we will be hosting a Hackathon in SHS. A Hackathon is a competition where various teams of student computer programmers collaborate to achieve a real-world problem. This is an opportunity, not only to win various prizes, but also to work with fellow computer scientists. It will be done during the whole school day.

Chromebook Printing at SHS

At SHS, we use a tool called “Papercut” for printing. The purpose of Papercut printing is to avoid wasteful printing. With Papercut, every student and faculty member has a Papercut account and is given a printing budget. Because all of the printers at SHS use Papercut printing, Chromebooks need to install an extension called “Mobility Print” in order to print to any of the printers here.

SHS Help Desk student Arjun Rastogi put together instructions on how to do this. You can find them here.

Additional printing resources/information can be found here.

SHS Help Desk Hackathon

Calling all coders, grades 6-12! – Mark your calendars for March 30, 2019! As one of our Spring projects, the Sharon High School Help Desk is working to set up our very own Hackathon!

A Hackathon is where various teams of people collaborate to achieve a real-world problem. Hackathons are often 24 hours, and are usually about building a software application or website.  Our Hackathon will only be 9.5 hours and will cater to all levels, so even if you have little coding experience, this Hackathon can be an engaging adventure!

Hackathons can inspire students to look at the world around them through a problem-solving lens. Teams of programmers compete in different challenges. Come experience the exhilaration of working alongside your peers to brainstorm and create something amazing!

Please sign up by Monday, March 25.  To register, go to https://www.tinyurl.com/sharonhacks.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Quick Printer Troubleshooting Tip

By Anton Voronov

This tip is useful when students who are trying to print from the library desktop computers find that they can’t print at all to the library copier or the elevator landing copier from any of the computers.  If this happens to you, it’s possible that there is a queue of student work that hasn’t printed that has held up other print jobs. This is how you clear up that queue.

  1. Click on the printer icon in your dock to open the print queue
  2. Click the “Jobs” menu
  3. Select “Show everyone’s jobs”

Show Everyone's Jobs

  • If you see a print job there that is holding up the other ones, select it and delete it.
  • Click on “Resume” to restart your print job.

The Benefits of Regularly Restarting Your Computer

Has your computer been having battery loss issues? Is the computer slow when using any software? Is the time glitching? Has the internet connection been having issues? There is a simple solution! Restarting your computer is the best solution to help with these problems. There are many benefits to restart your computer. First, restarting it allows the computer some time take a minute to restart its “brain.” Technology experts suggest restarting laptops on the weekend so they can rest before the week starts. In addition, although the computer empties its active memory (RAM), it will not wipe anything else. It only empties this due to the fact that it is trying to clear any faults. Rebooting will flush out unimportant and random data impeding your laptop. It will also help get rid of any technical issues such as time glitching, battery loss, or slow screen/browsers. Lastly, restarting the computer also fixes internet connection, stops memory leaks, saves money from having to go to technical support, and allows your computer to run faster.

If you need help to restart your laptop, follow the guided steps below.

  1.  Click the Apple Symbol Button on the top left-hand side of your computer.Screen Shot 2018-10-01 at 10.27.43 AM.png
  2. Next, find the Restart button.Screen Shot 2018-10-01 at 10.30.44 AM.png
  3. Then, click the button and the computer will restart(remember to press the “okay” button to confirm).

If you need any more help, go to the tech office or the SHS Help Desk in the library.

Hope this helps!

How to Fix the Date and Time on Your Laptop

Issue: Your computer’s date and time are off, which shouldn’t be a huge deal. But the real issue is it prevents you from using certain software and can incorrectly date important work.

Solution: This time glitch can be fixed in two ways. The first thing you should try is restarting your laptop. If that does not work, go into Self Service on your laptop and click the “Unlock Date & Time” application to install it. This will allow you to fix your date and time by yourself without a problem.

Here is how to get the application:

  1. Find the search button on the top right of your menu bar.Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 10.31.37 AM
  2. Search for Self Service in the search area.Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 10.31.32 AM
  3. This is what will pop up.Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 10.31.53 AM
  4. Scroll down to find “Unlock Date & Time”Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 10.32.01 AM
  5. Click the application to install.
